Platte D. Lyman, a son of Amasa Lyman and Eliza Partridge Lyman, was born on August 20, 1848, in a wagon on the Platte River. He was called by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help Silas S. Smith head the San Juan Mission in 1879, and essentially took over command of the expedition during Smith's prolonged absences. Oak City is located in Millard County, between the Fishlake National Forest and the Sevier River in Utah. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints founded a United Order there on May 3, 1874.
